WebPlus X5: 404 Reasons to Use

Having just returned from the world of Wordpress, I was finding it a nightmare, trying to pull in users to the (higher ranking) WebPlus version of my website, rather than clicking onto a rogue obsolete Wordpress component block that had gotten indexed. My solution was to go into the wonderful world of 404 error pages, and I'm beginning to wonder how I ever got on without them!

For info -

Create a .htaccess file with ErrorDocument 404 /notfound.html as the contents.

Create a html file called notfound.html which should contain your own custom error message, FULL (not partial) links to your website, and anything else you think a prospective user might need to see in order to make him want to click onto your website link.

Upload both of these into your root folder.

Many hosting providers will specify a 404 page for you, so the .htaccess step may not be necessary.

After doing all this, you could even now consider wiping your old version of the website from the face of the earth, as any clicks to the non-existent content will now go to your new 404 page.

And of course for a geeky party trick, you can tell people to try going to your-website.com/blah-blah-blah which will of course now take them to your new 404 page!
