WebPlus X6: Configuring Mal's eCommerce

Well, I'm not new to eCommerce, but I am new to Mal's via WPX6. I've managed to get an item onto the page and, although some of the options are a bit of a mystery at the moment, I can sort of see how it works, but I have been asked for a certain configuration and am not sure quite how to go about it.

My potential client is looking to sell what are effectively designs that appear in various formats, e.g. cups and saucers, greetings cards, prints, etc. She does NOT want different areas of the site for each category: instead, she wants to showcase the designs and give available options to choose from (perhaps using radio buttons or tick boxes). Each option would have its cost, but would be standalone (i.e. there would be no basic cost for the design itself).

Would it be possible to add an item with options WITHOUT there being a basic cost, or would it be better to add each option with its own add to cart button? I would prefer to keep it neat and go for options, but I'm not sure if what I'm asking is possible. I don't want to waste time playing with Mal's only to find out it won't do what I want, so I'm asking here in case anyone knows.

Thanks in advance for any hints and tips!
