WebPlus X6: Image Quality

I appologise for a question which has probably been asked lots of times, but hope someone will have the patience to answer.

I'm trying to create a personal website to showcase some of my photographs, so obviously I'd like them to look well on the screen. At the moment I'm using VisualLight Box to create various galleries and my intention is to have the images open up to 1200 x 800.

I've just done a trial gallery with an original image saved down from no reduction (12) right down to very low quality (1) in 10 stages, and have to say that I'm finding it difficult to see much difference between one with no reduction and one reduced to the 3 or 4 quality. I should say that I am getting on a bit and my eyesight isnt that of a 20 year old! However I would like visitors to the website to enjoy my photographs at their best.

So my basic question - is there a rule of thumb as to how much reduction you should do - and again bearing in mind it's for a photo gallery type of website, not one where the imagery is more incidental.

Thank you.
